[LOG — ALTITUDE 340M — FINAL TRANSMISSION WINDOW]
The storm breaks — and not on the hillside.
The clouds that timed their thunder to the word rock pass over the crowd and spend themselves somewhere past the ridge, leaving thousands untouched and dry beneath a sky that just finished threatening them. Nobody built on sand today. Nobody had to learn the hard way.
The teaching is over. And altitude gives the drone what proximity cannot: the shape of an ending, seen whole.
Watch the guards — Pre-Roll's bored pair, Signal's loose spear, Override's rigid recall. They have not moved from their post all series, but they stand now like men who came to watch for a threat and have no report for what they watched instead.
Watch Andrew, soaked from the night, standing near the front instead of the edges — the man who kept looking behind him has spent twelve chapters learning to look forward, and there is no drama left in his face. Just the quiet of a man who has run out of directions to doubt in.
Watch the patched cloak, dry-eyed at last, standing straighter than the morning found him — and mourning is not what his mornings will be called anymore.
Watch the travelers, who almost turned back at the base of this hill. They are not going anywhere. Maybe not for a long while.
And watch the boy — empty-handed since Inventory — holding his mother's hand now instead of a basket. Sit with the trade. It is the better one.
The crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority.
Not amazed first at the water. Not the baskets. The authority — the strange, quiet fact of a man who says blessed and love your enemy and build on the rock like it costs him nothing to mean it, because meaning it was never the hard part for him. The hard part was always going to be everyone else.
He starts down the hillside. Not toward the crown still lying somewhere uncollected. Just down — the next town, the next slope, the next crowd that has not heard yet.
The drone climbs. Three-forty. Four hundred. Five. Its ascent, the hillside's assent — the crowd dispersing in every direction, carrying the day home in a thousand versions that will disagree by evening and still, somehow, all be true. The valley goes gold to rust, the exact color of the cloth the bread came wrapped in — because this was never two stories. It was one, told from a height nobody thought to look up and notice.
Whether they knew it or not, the weather knew.
And everyone is already leaning forward — toward the next hillside. Toward whatever comes after this.
